Malaysia’s Proposition: 1) Increasing food spending - Malaysian’s food and beverage expenditure accounts for 25% of total consumer spending in Malaysia. The amount is expected to surge 131% by 2015 as disposable incomes rise. 2) Net importer of food products - Malaysia’s food import bill hit the all–time high of MYR19.9 billion (US$5.85 billion) in 2006 while its food exports recorded MYR11.4 billion (US$3.35 billion). 3) Modernizing the agriculture and agro-based industry - Agricultural development and agriculture is identified as Malaysia’s 3rd engine of economic growth. MYR11.4 billion (US$3.35 billion) is being allocated by the Malaysian Government to enhance the agriculture sector in the next 5 years. 4) ‘International Halal Food Hub’ - Malaysia’s positioning as the ‘International Halal Food Hub’ with its premier halal food processing base and global certification centre makes it a premier springboard to the global halal food market. 5) Gateway to the ASEAN market - As the world’s top 20th trading nation and coupled with the leading position in the intra-Asean trade, Malaysia is your ideal springboard to the ASEAN market with a population of 567 million people.
