PAKISTAN - THE REGIONAL GATEWAY FOR ENERGY
Pakistan's Oil, Gas and Energy industry has gained remarkable success in the past few years, backed by one of the fastest growing economies of the Asian Region. The country's economy grew at 7% during the fiscal year 2006-07 with high levels of investment in all the major industrial sectors. The combined Foreign Investment in the Oil, Gas and Power Generation Sector was about USD 779.6 million in 2006-7.
Because of the industry's importance to economic growth and development, the Government of Pakistan is putting special emphasis on the energy sector of the country and is developing plans to upgrade the infrastructure, construct new power projects, exploit alternate energy resources and is overhauling the existing power generation facilities to enhance the generation capacity to meet the rising demand of energy.
The Energy plan of the Government entails multi billion dollar investments in up-gradation and construction of new projects to meet the requirements of the country which are doubling every ten years.
Due to its ideal geographical location, Pakistan is serving as a corridor for the international supply routes of energy from the landlocked Central Asian States and the Middle East to the energy starved markets of India and China.
